BWT Filter#
BWT Bestmax inline water filter used with the Lelit Bianca V3. Reduces carbonate hardness (limescale) while retaining magnesium — the retained minerals improve extraction compared to fully softened or distilled water.
Part of the Espresso PAN.
How It Works#
| Stage | Action |
|---|---|
| Ion exchange resin | Reduces temporary hardness (carbonates / bicarbonates) |
| Magnesium enrichment | Adds Mg²⁺ ions — improves coffee flavour extraction |
| Activated carbon | Removes chlorine and odour |
The output targets ~80–100 ppm TDS — within the SCA recommended range for espresso (75–250 ppm, ideally ~150 ppm).
Maintenance#
| Task | Interval |
|---|---|
| Replace cartridge | Every 6 months or per capacity label |
| Test output hardness | At each cartridge change |
| Descale Lelit Bianca V3 brew boiler | Annually (or per hardness test) |
| Descale steam boiler | Annually (or per hardness test) |
Notes#
- Always flush a new cartridge for 5 minutes before first use
- Keep a spare cartridge — do not run filtered water past the rated capacity
- Output hardness increases gradually as resin exhausts; a TDS meter or hardness strips confirm when to replace
