Schwalbe Big Betty#

Schwalbe’s enduro rear tire installed on the rear of the Transition Relay Alloy PNW. The Big Betty is the natural rear-wheel counterpart to the Schwalbe Magic Mary — it shares the same casing and compound but uses a tighter, more closely-packed tread pattern that rolls faster and provides consistent traction under power without sacrificing cornering grip.

Compound & Casing#

ADDIX Soft delivers maximum grip for the rear wheel — critical for maintaining traction under braking and cornering on loose or wet surfaces. The same compound as the Schwalbe Magic Mary front tire, giving a consistent feel across the contact patches.

Super Trail reinforced sidewalls resist the higher loads the rear tire endures — more rider weight, more braking force, and more abrasion from rocks and roots contacting the sidewall.

Tread Design#

Centre knobs are lower profile and more closely packed than the Magic Mary, reducing rolling resistance for the rear wheel which does more of the pedalling work. Corner knobs remain large and aggressive for confident cornering. The transition from centre to corner is designed to be predictable — the tire holds its line before breaking away progressively.

The 27.5" diameter (vs the 29" front) is part of the mullet setup on the Relay — the smaller rear wheel improves agility and bottom bracket height while the larger front wheel rolls over obstacles more easily.

Tubeless Setup#

TLR bead; 4–5 oz of sealant recommended for the 2.4" volume. Rear tires typically run 2–4 PSI higher than the front to resist burping under hard cornering and braking:
